When sudden cardiac arrest strikes, the clock is ticking. The faster that treatment is provided with CPR and the use of an Automated External Defibrillator (AED), the better the chances are of survival. Each minute that goes by without treatment, decreases the chances of survival 10%.
Sudden cardiac arrest can happen to anyone, anywhere, at any time. It is very important to follow the Sudden Cardiac Arrest Chain of Survival immediately. This includes:
Activation of emergency response means, calling 9-1-1 (in the United States). When 9-1-1 is called, the dispatcher is going to activate the EMS system. This system is made up of firefighters, law enforcement, EMT’s, and more.
Often times, police officers are out patrolling streets in a community. There are many reasons why it is crucial all police vehicles should be equipped with an AED.
Due to their location within a community, often times, police officers may be the first on scene. Whether CPR has been started by a lay rescuer or not, it is extremely important for the officer to be equipped with an AED so it can be used as soon as they arrive. We don’t want to have to wait for an ambulance to arrive to use an AED.
Police officers go through intense training and are prepared to respond to all types of emergencies. Many parts of their job are highly stressful. A sudden cardiac arrest can be a high stress emergency and police officers are prepared to do what is needed in a rescue due to their intense preparation and training.
A combination of high-quality CPR and the quick use of an AED are what is needed when responding to sudden cardiac arrest. Police officers are trained in basic first aid so it is necessary for them to be equipped with a device that they can use to help save a life!
There are many stories we have heard about an off-duty police officer using an AED that was in his or her vehicle to save a life. Although it is important to have an AED at work, the accessibility of this AED is what really matters. We need faster response to sudden cardiac arrest and by equipping police officers with an AED in their vehicles, we will have more AEDs ready and accessible when they are needed.
